We\u2019re well over 6,000 miles from our children. For the first time we won\u2019t be spending Christmas together. We\u2019re not snuggled in our cozy home with a fire in the fireplace. We\u2019re not gathering at our familiar Christmas Eve service. We\u2019ve not come together around the familiar and comfortable. My heart aches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jkitchen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/moon-5830698_1280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3286\" src=\"https:\/\/jkitchen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/moon-5830698_1280-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jkitchen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/moon-5830698_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jkitchen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/moon-5830698_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jkitchen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/moon-5830698_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jkitchen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/moon-5830698_1280-676x450.jpg 676w, https:\/\/jkitchen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/moon-5830698_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This Christmas we find ourselves much closer than we\u2019ve ever been to the where all the action which brought us Christmas took place. A mere 640 miles away is Bethlehem, the site of Jesus\u2019 birth. Just down the road from ancient Nineveh and a few clicks north of what was once Babylon we are once again entering into our Christmas celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>We rejoice over and with new friends. We have a new faith-family with which we gather, give gifts, and sing the songs of hope and faith that are familiar to us. We share food, laughter, love, and hope.<\/p>\n<p>We celebrate Immanuel, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cGod with us\u201d<\/span> (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:23). My heart rejoices.<\/p>\n<p>Be it surrounded by the comfortable and familiar or the new and sometimes strange, <em>He remains<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Though those we love deepest are distant and ones we newly embrace are at hand,<em> He remains<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Though I cannot hug my children and though I still struggle with simple greetings here, <em>He remains<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We are not alone.
